Barnet’s houses and their carpets
Much of Barnet’s housing followed the Underground. The tube reached Golders Green in 1907 and Edgware in 1924, and most of the old Hendon parish was then covered by suburban houses, some planned, as in Hampstead Garden Suburb, and some built commercially. West Finchley dates only from the 1930s, when large houses across that parish were giving way to smaller ones and flats.
The Census still shows it. In Golders Green ward 28.8% of households live in semis and 10.6% in detached houses, and across the four Finchley wards semis are 21.4% and terraces 17.1%. Next door to Golders Green, Garden Suburb ward is 69.6% owner-occupied. A semi or a terrace usually puts at least one flight of stairs and a landing on the bill, and a hallway as well.
Flats are still close to half of Barnet’s homes (47.4% of households), most of them in purpose-built blocks (36.6%) and fewer in converted houses (8.8%). In Hendon and West Hendon wards purpose-built blocks hold 42.9% of households, and a flat there rarely has a staircase of its own.

Parking on bank holidays and other days
Barnet does not enforce resident bays, controlled parking zones, paid bays or business bays on bank holidays. Single and double yellow lines, loading bays and bus lanes are still enforced.
