Grandparents and a small boy laughing on the sofa of a 1930s semi-detached house

More than half of Merton households live in houses: 35.7 per cent terraced, 19.0 semi-detached, 5.7 detached. Carpet cleaning here is priced by room, from £36 a bedroom, plus each flight of stairs.

Drying usually takes a few hours and depends on how well the room is ventilated. Rugs are cleaned where they lie.

Merton homes and what their carpets cost

Type of homeMerton households, 2021Carpet lines to expect
Flat39.6%Bedrooms at £36, the living room at £43, the hallway at £22
Terraced house35.7%The same rooms, plus a flight at £41 and a landing at £9 for each floor above the ground
Semi-detached house19.0%Rooms, flights and landings; a knocked-through lounge is £61
Detached house5.7%Every carpeted room on every floor, with each flight and landing on its own line

The shares are Census 2021 figures for the whole borough (Nomis). A three-bedroom terrace with a through lounge, a hall and one staircase comes to three bedrooms at £36 each, the through lounge, the hallway, one flight and one landing. A two-bedroom flat in a purpose-built block is just its two bedrooms, the living room and the hall, so the house costs more for the same bedroom count.

Wards of houses, wards of flats

The borough average hides big differences. Graveney is 48.3 per cent terraced and Pollards Hill 45.8 per cent, with only 19.1 per cent of Pollards Hill households renting privately. Merton Park is 71.4 per cent owner-occupied. In Wimbledon the Village ward is 66.5 per cent owner-occupied, Wimbledon Park is 36.8 per cent terraced, and 9.6 per cent of households across the five Wimbledon wards live in detached houses, a higher share than the borough’s. At the other end, Colliers Wood is mostly flats (61.3 per cent of households), so a carpet job there is more often a single floor with no stairs at all.

A house usually means a staircase as well, and the stairs change the order of work. The cleaner starts on the top landing, works down the flight and finishes in the ground-floor rooms, so nobody has to cross a damp stair to leave.

Conservation areas and older houses

Merton’s list names 29 conservation areas. Seven carry Wimbledon’s name (Broadway, Chase, Hill Road, North, Village, West and Windmill), with Wimbledon Broadway designated in 1985; others include Cricket Green in Mitcham, Upper Morden, Wandle Valley and John Innes: Merton Park, which has Article 4 directions. A carpet clean lifts no boards and alters nothing outside, so none of those controls applies to it.

Parking in Wimbledon’s controlled zones

Merton’s zone list shows 30 controlled parking codes around Wimbledon: 15 in the town centre, 4 around Wimbledon Park and 11 in Wimbledon Village. Hours differ from zone to zone and the council tells drivers to check the signs, so the zone code on the nearest post is the most useful thing to give us when we ring back. Visiting trades can also use Merton’s virtual trade permit, which covers the designated bays of any zone in the borough.

Hot water extraction, room by room

Each carpet is vacuumed first to lift grit out of the pile. Marks and the worn paths by doors are treated, then the carpet is cleaned by hot water extraction: hot water with a cleaning solution is pushed into the fibres and drawn straight back out, taking the dirt with it. A rug on a wood or tiled floor is cleaned in the same place, on the floor it covers, and never taken away.

The machine needs your water and electricity, so both stay on. Clear small things from the floor and leave the heavy furniture where it is; beds, wardrobes and sofas are cleaned around. When the cleaner leaves, open the windows and keep air moving, because that is what brings the drying time down. The carpet cleaning page for London explains which stains usually lift.

Questions about carpet cleaning in Merton

How long until we can use the room again?

Usually a few hours. Drying depends on ventilation, so open the windows and keep a door ajar; on a cold day low heating helps too.

Should I vacuum before the cleaner arrives?

There is no need, because every carpet is vacuumed before it is cleaned. Lifting toys, shoes and cables off the floor is the most useful thing to do beforehand.

Do rugs go away to be cleaned?

No. A rug is cleaned where it lies, at £35 up to 3 square metres and £51 for anything larger.

Is a through lounge priced as one room?

Yes. A knocked-through lounge is one line at £61, however the two halves are furnished.

Our house is in the John Innes conservation area. Is that a problem?

No. Its Article 4 directions control changes to the house, and a carpet clean lifts and changes nothing, so it needs no permission.

Can I add the carpets to my move-out clean?

Yes. With an end of tenancy clean in Merton, bedrooms are £29 and the living room £36, done on the same visit.

Ring 020 3734 1438 and list the rooms, stairs and rugs.
