Tower Hamlets homes and their carpet prices
The price is the sum of the carpeted rooms. The table takes the home types the 2021 Census finds in the borough and shows an example list of rooms for each, priced with our room rates.
| Home | Share of households | Example rooms | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flat in a purpose-built block | 80.7% (93.5% in Canary Wharf ward) | Two bedrooms, living room, hallway | 2 x £36 + £43 + £22 |
| Terraced house | 8.8% (24.9% in Bow West) | Three bedrooms, through lounge, one flight of stairs, landing, hallway | 3 x £36 + £61 + £41 + £9 + £22 |

Bow terraces, listed blocks and factory flats
Houses are rare in the borough as a whole, but Bow West is the exception: a quarter of its households (24.9%) live in terraced houses and 10.4% in converted or shared houses, while Bow East is 75.9% purpose-built flats. The Fairfield Road conservation area, designated in September 1989, includes low terraces of two or three storeys on Wrexham Road, Jebb Street and Ridgdale Street, which means one flight of stairs to price, or two.
Beside those streets, Bow Quarter fills the former Bryant and May match factory, a Grade II listed building from 1861 that closed in 1979 and was redeveloped as an inward-looking private housing development. Our Bow page has more on the district and its homes.
Further west the Boundary Estate around Arnold Circus is made up of 20 Grade II listed blocks of five-storey flats, put up by the London County Council between 1894 and 1900, so give us the floor when you book. Bethnal Green ward follows the borough pattern, with 79.7% of households in purpose-built blocks and only 3.6% in converted or shared houses. At Wood Wharf, the newest Canary Wharf neighbourhood, the sale buildings include the loft-style 8 Harbord Square.
Getting the carpet machine to the door
Roman Road Market, founded in 1888, runs along a partly pedestrianised street that is effectively closed to vehicles while the market trades, so on market days the cleaner parks on a side street and carries the machine in.
Bow is in parking Zone B, and its sub-zones keep different hours. B1 and part of B3 are controlled from 8.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Saturday, B2 and the rest of B3 over the same hours on weekdays only and B4 until 7.30pm Monday to Saturday, with Sundays added when London Stadium has an event. Cashless bays in Zones B and D cost £5.50 an hour for a standard vehicle and £8.50 for a diesel.
Hot water extraction, rugs and drying
Hot water extraction rinses the carpet: hot water and a cleaning solution go down into the pile and come straight back up with the dirt they have loosened. Rugs are cleaned where they lie, in the room they belong to, and are priced by size. A through lounge, two rooms knocked into one, counts as a single room at £61. Drying usually takes a few hours and depends on ventilation; in a flat, open a window and the room door so the air can move through.
The machine runs from a socket and fills at a tap, so keep the electricity and water on. Clear shoes, boxes and toys off the floor beforehand and point out the marks that bother you most.
If you are leaving a rented flat, carpets added to an end of tenancy clean in the borough cost £29 a bedroom and £36 a living room.

Tower Hamlets carpet cleaning questions
How much is a two-bed flat?
Two bedrooms, a living room and a hallway come to 2 x £36 plus £43 and £22. Each rug adds £35 or £51, depending on its size.
Do you take rugs to a workshop?
No. Every rug is cleaned on your floor, in its own room, so there is nothing to collect or deliver.
Can you clean the stairs in a Bow terrace?
Yes, at £41 a flight, with the landing at £9. A three-storey house on Wrexham Road or Jebb Street has two flights.
How soon can I walk on the carpet?
It is usually dry within a few hours, depending on ventilation. Keep outdoor shoes off it until then.
Do you work on Sundays?
Yes, 8am to 7pm, seven days. In Bow’s sub-zone B4, Sundays are controlled when London Stadium holds an event, so parking is charged on those days.
