A mother holding her baby in a bright, tidy flat with the balcony door open

London County Council built the Boundary Estate’s 20 five-storey blocks around Arnold Circus between 1894 and 1900; cleaning a Bethnal Green flat today costs £23 an hour on a weekly visit.

Council blocks, private lets and listed estates in E2

Bethnal Green ward counted 7,249 households in 2021. 86.3% lived in flats, nearly all of them (79.7%) in purpose-built blocks, while 10.9% lived in terraced houses and only 3.6% in converted or shared houses. Social renting is the largest tenure at 43.6%, with 26.3% renting from the council. Private renting, at 30.9%, is below the Tower Hamlets figure of 38.2%, and 23.2% of households own their home.

The Boundary Estate went up after one of the first slum clearances in the East End, and its blocks are Grade II listed; the conservation area around them was designated in December 1985. Bethnal Green Gardens, designated in July 1969 and extended in October 2008, centres on the Town Hall, the Bethnal Green Museum and the public gardens, with the Grade I listed St John’s Church at its heart.

So most homes here are flats with a shared entrance and a staircase or lift, in blocks built from the 1890s to the present. If yours is one of the listed blocks, say so when you book and we allow for it when the hours are set.

Bethnal Green prices

A regular cleaner costs £23 an hour on a weekly rota and £24 an hour fortnightly. The shortest visit is three hours. Deep cleaning is priced per cleaner-hour at £26, and £30 is added once for the equipment and detergents, which makes the smallest deep clean £186. Moving-out cleans are fixed at £156 for a studio, £207 for a one-bed and £243 for a two-bed, and any one-off job starts at £67. Larger homes and every add-on are on the London price list. Bays in Zone A are charged, so on a one-off clean with no free parking nearby the bay is added at what it costs, never more than £40.

Cleaning a Bethnal Green flat

On a regular visit the cleaner does the kitchen, the bathroom, the dusting, the beds and the floors, finishing at the door. In E2 the bathroom takes longer than people expect. Thames Water’s 2025 report for its Bethnal Green supply zone gives mean hardness of 276 mg/l, with samples from 265 to 284, and the Globe Town and Whitechapel zones give 269 and 273. Scale on taps, the shower screen and the kettle is dealt with every visit before it hardens.

A deep clean covers the parts left over from the weekly routine: cupboard interiors, the fridge, the extractor hood, grout, skirting boards, door frames and the window sills and tracks. The team brings its own equipment and products. The water and electricity stay on.

Moving out of a rented flat is a separate job, the Tower Hamlets end of tenancy clean; if the inventory clerk or letting agent marks something we cleaned, tell us within 48 hours and we return to put it right at no charge. A worn carpet can be cleaned by hot water extraction from £36 a bedroom (carpet cleaning), and a single oven costs £77 through oven cleaning in the borough, cleaned by hand in your kitchen.

Zone A parking and landlord licensing

The Tower Hamlets parking zone A covers the Bethnal Green area, and its six sub-zones keep different hours. Most are controlled Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 5.30pm, but some add Saturday, Sunday or late-evening controls, so the sign on your street decides. Cashless parking costs £6.80 an hour (£10.20 for a diesel) in the premium sub-zones A1, A2, A5 and A6, and £6.00 in A3 and A4, where diesels also pay more. A resident can buy a one-day visitor voucher for £3.90.

For landlords, the borough-wide additional licensing scheme, running from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2029, applies to flats and houses shared by three or more people from two or more households. The older selective scheme that ended in September 2026 covered Weavers, Whitechapel and Spitalfields & Banglatown, never Bethnal Green ward itself.

Two stations and the neighbours of E2

Bethnal Green Underground station is on the Central line and the rail station on the Weaver line, both in fare zone 2. Neighbouring Shoreditch belongs to Hackney and has a page of its own, as does the City of London.

Questions about cleaning in Bethnal Green

Can you clean a flat on the Boundary Estate?

Yes. The blocks are Grade II listed and five storeys high, so tell us the floor and how to get in when you book, and the cleaner arrives knowing the building.

How much will the cleaner’s parking cost in Zone A?

Between £6.00 and £6.80 an hour for a standard car on cashless parking, depending on the sub-zone. A diesel pays more, up to £10.20 an hour in the premium sub-zones.

Is the water especially hard in Bethnal Green?

It is hard. Thames Water’s Bethnal Green supply zone averaged 276 mg/l in its 2025 report, with samples up to 284 mg/l, so limescale builds quickly on chrome and glass.

How do I get rid of an old sofa before the clean?

Tower Hamlets gives residents two free bulky waste collections a year of up to five items. The items go outside at ground-floor level, and in many blocks the council crew has no key or fob for the bin store, so ask your caretaker or housing manager where to leave them.

Do you clean council flats in Bethnal Green?

Yes. Council and housing association homes are the largest group here, and a weekly or deep clean of one is priced exactly as any other flat.

Tell us the street or the block and the number of bedrooms, and we will ring back with a price for your Bethnal Green clean.
