Kitchens in Tower Hamlets flats and shared homes
This is a borough of flats. The 2021 Census counted 87.8% of households in them, and 80.7% in purpose-built blocks, with 8.8% in terraced houses. In Canary Wharf ward the share of flats rises to 96.0%, almost all of them in purpose-built blocks. The four Vertus buildings are 10 George Street, 8 Water Street, Newfoundland and 50-60 Charter Street, and more kitchens are on the way: Wood Wharf is planned to reach up to 3,600 homes, a quarter of them affordable, alongside offices, shops, a GP surgery and a school.
Shared homes are the other common kitchen. The borough-wide additional licensing scheme, in force from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2029, requires a licence for any flat or house occupied by three or more people from two or more households. The council has also confirmed an Article 4 direction that takes away the permitted development right to turn a family home into a small HMO, so that change now needs planning permission. In a licensed shared flat one oven usually serves every household, and the landlord can book it between tenancies, or when one room is re-let.

Inside the oven clean
The cleaner starts by lifting out the racks, trays and shelf supports and leaving them to soak. The cavity is then cleaned by hand, along with the door glass and the seals, in your kitchen. The inner door glass is included only where the door design lets it come apart. Once the soaked parts are clean they go back in, and you can cook the same evening; open a window for a while and any smell clears.
Before the cleaner arrives, turn the oven off so it has cooled, take any pans off the hob and clear the worktop beside the cooker. The water and electricity need to stay on.
A hob or extractor added to the booking is cleaned on the same visit. A tenant who is moving out can put the oven on an end of tenancy clean in Tower Hamlets instead, where a single costs £31.
Parking for an oven visit: weekdays and Saturdays
Tower Hamlets groups controlled parking into four parent zones: A around Bethnal Green, B around Bow, C around Shadwell and Stepney and D around Poplar and Crossharbour. Most sub-zones are controlled from 8.30am to 5.30pm on weekdays. Zone A’s sub-zones vary more, and some of them add Saturday, Sunday or late-evening controls.
So the day of the week matters more than the hour. A weekday visit in Poplar or Crossharbour falls inside controlled hours, while a Saturday visit in Zone D’s sub-zones D1 and D2, controlled Monday to Friday only, falls outside them. Around Bethnal Green, read the sub-zone sign before choosing a day.
If you live at the address, a resident’s visitor voucher costs £3.90 and covers one day, which is usually the simplest way to cover a weekday oven visit.
Booking an oven clean in Tower Hamlets
Use the form or ring 020 3734 1438 any time, with the oven type and your postcode; a quick measure of the width and a count of the doors settles the type. A single is the standard 60cm oven with one door, a double has two doors in the same width, a single wide is one large cavity about 90cm across and a 90cm range is a freestanding cooker with two or more ovens. We ring back between 8am and 7pm to set the date and confirm the price, and a 50% deposit holds it, with the rest due once the oven is clean. In a managed block, ask the building team whether visiting contractors sign in at the desk. The London oven cleaning page explains the oven types in more detail.

Questions about oven cleaning in Tower Hamlets
Do you clean ovens in Canary Wharf rental buildings?
Yes. The price follows the oven, so a single is £77 in a build-to-rent flat as it is anywhere else. If the building has a concierge, let them know the date in advance.
Our shared flat has one oven for four people. Does that cost more?
The price is set by the type of oven, so a single is £77 however many people cook on it. A heavily used oven takes the cleaner longer; the price stays the same.
Can I cook the same day?
Yes, that evening. A window open for a while clears any smell when it first heats up.
Is the glass inside the door cleaned?
Where the door is built to come apart, yes. Otherwise the cleaner does all the glass that can be reached.
Do you clean ovens in council flats?
Yes. Council and housing association tenants are 35.9% of Tower Hamlets households, and they book the same way as anyone else, at the same price for each oven type.
Can the hob and extractor be done too?
Yes, on the same visit: £23 for a ceramic hob, £28 for gas and £28 for an extractor over a standard cooker.
