Shared kitchens under Hounslow’s HMO licence

Hounslow’s additional HMO licence has covered the whole borough from 11 December 2025 and runs until 10 December 2030, alongside mandatory licensing for homes of five or more. A licence normally lasts five years, though the council can grant one for a single year where it has concerns about management or the condition of the property. In a licensed house the kitchen is shared by several households and usually has one cooker, which the landlord can have cleaned between tenancies or at any time.

Inside the oven visit

Start with a cold oven. The cleaner takes out the racks, trays and shelf supports and soaks them, then cleans the cavity by hand while they soak. The glass and door seals are cleaned by hand next, and the inner door glass is taken out only where the door design lets it come apart. Once the parts are rinsed and back in place, any hob or extractor on the booking is done.

Before the cleaner arrives

Switch the oven off well before the visit so it has cooled, and empty the drawer underneath. Clear the hob and the worktop beside the oven of pans and jars, because the cleaner needs room to work, and take down anything resting on the cooker hood if the hood is on the booking. In a shared kitchen, warn the other tenants that the oven will be out of use until the evening.
