Seven in ten Islington households rent their home (40.2% socially and 31.2% privately at the 2021 Census), and oven cleaning here costs £77 for a single oven, cleaned by hand in the kitchen.
Living and renting in Islington now
More Islington households rent from a social landlord than live any other way: 25.0% rent from the council and 15.2% from housing associations and other social landlords. Private tenants make up 31.2%, owners 26.7% and shared owners another 1.6%. The districts vary around that mix. In the three wards around Angel, 38.3% of households rent socially and 32.4% privately, while in Highbury and Arsenal wards owners lead at 36.7%, ahead of private tenants (32.7%) and social tenants (30.4%).
Flats are the norm, at 83.7% of households, and 57.4% of households live in purpose-built blocks, so an Islington oven is most likely in a flat. Houses are a small share: 12.7% of households live in a terrace and 3.6% in a semi or detached home. Even in Highbury, with its Georgian terraces, purpose-built blocks hold 49.9% of households in Highbury and Arsenal wards.
Shared kitchens and Islington’s three licences
Islington licenses private lets by how many people, and how many households, share the home. In a shared let the kitchen is usually one of the shared rooms, so the same rules decide how many households use the oven.
| Who lives there | Scheme | Where it applies |
|---|---|---|
| 5 or more unrelated people | Mandatory HMO licensing | The whole borough |
| 3 or 4 unrelated people | Additional licensing | Includes flats let this way in purpose-built blocks and in converted buildings that miss the 1991 Building Regulations |
| One person, two people sharing, or one household | Selective licensing | Named wards only: Finsbury Park, Hillrise and Tollington now, and seven more from 23 November 2026 |
Whichever scheme applies, the oven is priced by the appliance. A landlord between lets can add it to the move-out clean, as the prices below show.
The oven clean in your kitchen
The cleaner starts by taking out the removable parts, the racks, trays and shelf supports, and putting them to soak. While they soak, the cavity is cleaned by hand, then the glass and the door seals. The inner door glass is taken out only on doors designed to come apart. Once the parts are clean and back in place, the oven can be used the same evening; open a window for a while and any smell clears.
All of it happens in your kitchen. Keep the water and electricity on, and switch the oven off in good time so it is cold when the cleaner arrives. A hob or an extractor can be done on the same visit.

Short-stay parking for an oven visit
An oven visit is shorter than a full clean, which suits Islington’s short-stay bays. The borough has almost 6,500 of them, paid through RingGo at between £4.25 and £7.30, with a surcharge of up to £1.05 between 10am and 1pm on weekdays. Controlled hours in most zones run from 8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday, some zones add Saturday, and zones C and K are controlled 24 hours.
On a weekday, a visit that starts after 1pm keeps clear of that surcharge. Short-stay bays are also the ones a resident’s visitor e-voucher cannot cover, so RingGo is the way to pay there.
If the old cooker is going rather than being cleaned, Islington’s recycling centre in Hornsey Street (N7 8HU) takes appliances brought by car or van, and a van needs a booked slot.

Islington oven cleaning questions
Our flat has four unrelated sharers. Does the landlord need a licence?
Islington’s additional licensing covers HMOs with 3 or 4 unrelated people, including flats in purpose-built blocks, so most likely yes. The council’s property licensing team decides each case.
Can I use the oven the same day?
Yes, that evening. Air the kitchen with an open window for a while and the smell goes.
Should the oven be empty when the cleaner arrives?
Empty out anything you keep in it, such as baking tins, and leave the racks in place; the cleaner lifts those out to soak.
Do you clean the hob too?
If you add it: £23 for a ceramic hob and £28 for gas. An extractor is £28.
Do you cover Highbury, Holloway and Finsbury Park?
Yes. We clean ovens in every Islington postcode: N1, N5, N7, N19 and EC1V. The Highbury page has more on N5.
Is it cheaper to book the oven with a move-out clean?
Yes. Added to an end of tenancy clean, the oven drops to £31 (single or single wide) or £62 (double or 90cm range), against £77 and £110 booked on their own.
Ring 020 3734 1438 and say whether it is a single, double or range oven.
