Brixton’s Electric Avenue, laid out between 1888 and 1891, was one of the first streets in England lit by electricity; a mansion flat there can have a weekly cleaner at £23 an hour.
Lambeth’s conservation area statement says the homes tucked into the town centre are mostly mansion blocks, on Electric Avenue, Coldharbour Lane and Rushcroft Road. Around them stand houses older than the railway, mostly stock brick with stucco, columned porches, cornices and timber sash windows; those on St John’s Crescent rise three storeys over a semi-basement, with panelled doors. Cornices, panelled doors and sashes hold dust in their mouldings, so a period flat can take longer than its floor area suggests.
The Census gives the wider picture. In the four Brixton wards (Acre Lane, North, Rush Common and Windrush) 79.2% of households live in flats, 54.6% in purpose-built blocks and 21.9% in converted or shared houses; 14.7% live in terraced houses and 4.9% in semi-detached ones. Tenure differs from the borough too: 41.6% rent from a social landlord, 28.9% rent privately and 26.8% own.
The wards are far from alike. Brixton North is 87.2% flats and 54.3% social rented. Brixton Acre Lane has the most private renting of the four, 36.4%, and 31.3% of its households live in converted or shared houses. More homes are on the way: work started on 16 March 2026 on 187 social and affordable homes on Somerleyton Road, the next phase of a 378-home council scheme.
Prices for a Brixton clean
Regular cleaning costs £23 an hour each week, or £24 an hour every other week, for at least 3 hours a visit. Deep cleans are priced per cleaner-hour at £26, with £30 on top for equipment and detergents, and start at £186 for two cleaners over three hours. A move-out clean has one fixed price per size: £156 for a studio, £207 for one bedroom and £243 for two. One-off jobs start at £67, and carpets, upholstery and ovens are on the price list. If a one-off clean has no free parking close by, the bay’s cost on the day is added, up to £40 at most.
Included in a weekly or deep clean
A weekly or fortnightly visit keeps a home at the level it has already reached. It covers:
- kitchen worktops, the hob, the sink and the fronts of cupboards and appliances
- the bathroom: bath or shower, basin, toilet, mirror and tiles
- dusting from the highest shelf down to the skirting, and fresh bedding put on when it is left out
- hoovering and mopping, ending at the front door
A deep clean goes further, into cupboards, the fridge and the microwave, behind furniture that can be moved, and along door frames, radiators and window tracks. Thames Water says every part of its region has hard water, since its sources run through chalky limestone, so descaling the taps and the shower glass belongs in both. The team brings equipment and products to a deep clean, and the water and electricity stay on.
Moving out is the Lambeth end of tenancy clean, with one promise attached: tell us within 48 hours if the inventory clerk or agent marks something we cleaned, and we come back to put it right at no charge. Carpet cleaning is by hot water extraction from £36 a bedroom. A single oven costs £77, cleaned by hand in your kitchen and ready to use again that evening.
- End of tenancy cleaningfrom £156A fixed price by the size of the home, with a 48-hour re-clean if the inventory clerk marks something we cleaned.
- Deep cleaningfrom £186A team of two or more for a day of the jobs a weekly clean never reaches.
- Domestic cleaningfrom £69 a visitA weekly or fortnightly cleaner, the same person where we can manage it.
- After builders cleaningfrom £212Dust, paint spots and grout film cleared once the trades have gone.
- Carpet cleaningfrom £67Hot water extraction priced by the room, rugs cleaned where they lie.
- Upholstery cleaningfrom £67Sofas, armchairs, mattresses and curtains, priced by the piece.
- Oven cleaningfrom £67Racks and trays soaked, glass and seals cleaned by hand in your kitchen, priced by oven type.
Parking zones and licensing around the market
The town centre, Brixton station included, is zone BI: controlled Monday to Saturday from 8:30am to 6:30pm, with individual bays to check. Brixton B runs on weekdays from 8:30am to 5:30pm, Brixton E and Brixton Hill D on weekdays to 6:30pm, and Brixton Hill F only from noon to 2pm. Lambeth also lists free one-hour bays (no return within two hours): 30 on Brixton Station Road from Pope’s Road to Gresham Road and Valentia Place, four in Electric Lane and two on Saltoun Road. An hour suits unloading and little else.
Visitor vouchers belong to residents and cannot be used for a trade, and the traders’ voucher wants a works order or quote with the address and up to 10 working days before it is approved. So during controlled hours the cleaner’s car normally goes in a paid bay.
For landlords, all four Brixton wards have been in Lambeth’s phase 2 selective licensing area from 1 September 2025, so a private let to one household or two unrelated sharers needs a licence. Shared houses of three or more people from two or more households come under the borough-wide HMO scheme, whose notice ends it on 8 December 2026 unless revoked earlier. The Lambeth page covers the rest of the borough, and Clapham has a page of its own.
Booking a clean in SW9 or SW2
Brixton spans two postcodes. SW9 holds the Acre Lane, North and Windrush wards and runs on into Stockwell, Oval, Myatt’s Fields and Clapham East; SW2 holds Acre Lane, Rush Common and Windrush and reaches Clapham Park, Herne Hill & Loughborough Junction, St Martin’s, Streatham Hill and West Dulwich. The price is the same in both, and Dulwich and Streatham are covered on their own pages.
Send the form with the postcode, or ring 020 3734 1438 at any hour. Cleans run from 8am to 7pm on every day of the week. We call back to fix the date and confirm the price for the home itself; half the price paid as a deposit secures the booking, and the balance is due after the clean.
Questions from Brixton households
Is there anywhere free to park near Brixton market?
Yes, for an hour. The free bays on Brixton Station Road, Electric Lane and Saltoun Road allow one hour with no return within two, which is too short for a regular clean, so a longer visit needs a paid bay.
Do you clean mansion flats on Coldharbour Lane and Rushcroft Road?
Yes. Mansion blocks usually share an entrance and stairs, so tell us the floor and how the cleaner gets in; inside the flat the visit covers every room in the list above.
Is my Brixton let licensed?
It should be. Acre Lane, North, Rush Common and Windrush wards are all in Lambeth’s selective licensing area from 1 September 2025, so private lets to one household or two unrelated sharers need a licence, and houses shared by three or more people from two households or more need an HMO licence.
Is Brixton SW9 or SW2?
Both. Acre Lane and Windrush wards appear in both districts, Brixton North is listed under SW9 and Rush Common under SW2. Our prices do not change with the postcode.
Can the cleaner come on a Saturday?
Yes, we clean seven days. Around the station, zone BI is controlled on Saturdays as well, from 8:30am to 6:30pm, while zones B, E and D are controlled on weekdays only.
Give us the street and the size of the flat or house, and we will ring back with a price for your Brixton clean.
