Kitchens in Wandsworth homes
Most kitchens here are in flats, and the flats come in two kinds of building. The first is the new-build block: across Battersea’s six wards 65.7 per cent of households are in purpose-built blocks, and Nine Elms is almost nothing else. The second is the converted house, where the kitchen went in when the house was split; in Lavender ward 43.3 per cent of households live in a flat of that kind.
Shared kitchens come into it too. Since 1 July 2025 the council’s additional licensing has covered smaller shared homes across the whole borough, including an HMO let to up to four people who share a kitchen. In those houses one oven serves several households, and a landlord can book it between lets.
Social renters are 19.3 per cent of the borough. The Alton estate in Roehampton (SW15) sits in a 58 hectare conservation area designated on 15 March 2001, with five Grade II listed slab blocks on Highcliffe Drive. Listing makes no difference to an oven clean, which changes nothing in the building.
The oven clean, step by step
- The racks, trays and shelf supports are taken out and soaked.
- While they soak, the cleaner works by hand on the cavity, the glass and the door seals, in your kitchen.
- The inner door glass is cleaned too where the door design lets it come apart; where it does not, the cleaner does every face that can be reached.
- The parts go back in, and the oven is usable the same evening. A window left open for a while clears any smell.
Before the cleaner comes, let the oven cool, clear the worktop next to it and empty the drawer underneath. Keep the electricity and water on.
Hobs, extractors and range cookers
A hob or an extractor booked alone would hit the £67 minimum, so they are best added to the oven visit. A 90cm range is priced on its own line, and a range hob or a range hood is £48.

Parking for a short visit in Putney and Tooting
An oven visit is short enough for the one-hour rules to help. On Lower Richmond Road in Putney, zone A5 is controlled only from 9.30am to 10.30am, Monday to Friday, with permit-holder-only bays, so a visit that starts after 10.30am misses the controlled hour. Tooting High Street (zones E1 and E2) is controlled Monday to Saturday, 9.30am to 5.30pm, at £3.70 to £4.30 an hour with a four hour maximum.
Residents can also help. Visitor permits are issued only to residents, are valid only in the zone named on them and do not work on housing estates or private roads. A resident with a parking permit in a one-hour zone gets ten free one-hour visitor permits in a rolling 12 months. In a zone like that, one permit covers the controlled hour.
