A mother holding her baby in a bright, tidy flat with the balcony door open

The Bermondsey Street area is distinctive for small warehouses, four storeys and three bays wide, many converted to loft-style homes in the 1980s and 1990s; a weekly cleaner for one costs £23 an hour.

Lofts are the exception, though. In the North Bermondsey, South Bermondsey and London Bridge & West Bermondsey wards 88.5% of households live in flats, most of them in purpose-built blocks, and only 2.2% in converted or shared houses; terraced houses account for 8.3%. London Bridge & West Bermondsey on its own is 95.4% flats.

A weekly visit to a Bermondsey flat, start to finish

The visit starts at the entrance to the block. Tell us how the cleaner gets in (a fob, a door code or a concierge who signs visitors in), which floor the flat is on and whether there is a lift.

Inside, the kitchen comes first: worktops, the hob, the sink and taps, cupboard and appliance fronts, then the floor. Where the kitchen and living room share one open space, the worktops are finished before any mopping starts. The bathroom is next, then dusting from high to low across the rooms and the beds, if fresh linen is left out. The floors come last, worked back towards the front door. Three hours is the minimum on a weekly or fortnightly rota.

A deep clean follows the same route with two or more cleaners and more time: inside cupboards and appliances, behind furniture that can be moved, skirting boards, door frames, radiators and window tracks. They bring the equipment and products; you leave the water and electricity on. Dust left by building work needs an after builders clean, priced from £212.

Prices in SE1 and SE16

Weekly cleaning is £23 an hour and fortnightly £24, three hours a visit at least. Deep cleans cost £26 per cleaner-hour plus £30 for equipment and detergents, from £186. One-off work starts at £67, and the price list has the rest. When a one-off clean has nowhere free to park, we add the bay’s cost on the day, never more than £40.

Private renting is 35.1% across the three wards, against 28.7% across Southwark, and reaches 38.4% in London Bridge & West Bermondsey. When a tenancy ends, the end of tenancy clean is fixed by size, £156 for a studio and £207 for a one-bed. If the inventory clerk or agent marks something we cleaned, tell us within 48 hours and we put it right at no charge.

Carpets are cleaned by hot water extraction from £36 a bedroom, rugs where they lie. A single oven is £77 through oven cleaning and can be used again that evening; a window open for a while clears any smell.

Parking zone G and the rest of Bermondsey

Zone G in Bermondsey is controlled on all seven days, 8:30am to 11pm, and costs £8.60 an hour by phone, as does London Bridge zone F, controlled Monday to Saturday from 8am to 6:30pm. South Bermondsey (SB, weekdays 8am to 6:30pm) and South East Bermondsey (SEB, weekdays 8:30am to 6:30pm) charge £5.70 an hour. Southwark lists no permit for a tradesperson at a private home, so a visiting cleaner normally uses a paid or shared-use bay.

Licensing is split as well. London Bridge & West Bermondsey and South Bermondsey wards are in Southwark’s selective licensing area from 1 November 2023 to 31 October 2028, while North Bermondsey ward is not on the list. Shared houses of three or more people from two or more households need the borough-wide additional licence, which the council’s notice ends on 1 March 2027 unless revoked earlier.

A previous tenant’s furniture cannot go in Southwark’s £37 household bulky collection; the council sends landlords and agents to business waste. The Southwark borough page has the wider rules, and Peckham and Dulwich are covered on their own pages.

Thorburn Square, the Leather Market and SE16

Bermondsey was long the centre of the leather trade, and its Leather Market dates from 1833; the New Caledonian Antiques Market began in Bermondsey Square in 1950. Along Bermondsey Street the townscape mixes 18th century houses and shops with 19th and 20th century warehouses in yellow stock brick, narrow plots and arched alleyways, beside areas of mid 20th century public housing.

South of Southwark Park Road, Thorburn Square conservation area, about 9.5 hectares and designated on 30 January 1991, is described as the largest old residential area left in North Southwark: mostly two-storey Victorian terraced houses with repeated ornamental details. For a house there, tell us the bedrooms and bathrooms and we agree the hours on the phone. Southwark Park is on Historic England’s Register of Parks and Gardens.

SE16 crosses into Lewisham (Evelyn and New Cross Gate wards) and SE1 into Lambeth (Waterloo & South Bank, Vauxhall, Kennington), and our prices are the same wherever the boundary falls. Book with the form or on 020 3734 1438 at any time. We clean 8am to 7pm seven days a week and phone back to settle the date and price; a 50% deposit holds it, and the balance is due after the clean.

Bermondsey questions

Can the cleaner park near Bermondsey Street in the evening?

Zone G stays controlled until 11pm every day, so a bay there costs £8.60 an hour by phone whenever the clean runs. SB and SEB are controlled on weekdays only.

Do you clean warehouse lofts in Bermondsey?

Yes. Tell us the floor, whether there is a lift and anything high or fragile, and we agree the hours when we ring back. The hourly rate is the same as for any flat.

Who removes furniture a previous tenant left?

Southwark’s bulky collection is for residents’ own household items only, so a landlord or agent has to use business waste for a previous tenant’s leftovers. Have it gone by the day of the clean, so the cleaner can reach the floor and skirting beneath it.

Is my Bermondsey flat in a selective licensing ward?

If it is in London Bridge & West Bermondsey or South Bermondsey ward, yes, until 31 October 2028. North Bermondsey ward is outside the selective scheme, though an HMO there still needs the borough-wide additional licence.

What does a weekly cleaner cost in Bermondsey?

£23 an hour, three hours a visit at least, which makes £69 a week; fortnightly visits are £24 an hour.

Tell us the block or street, the floor and the number of bedrooms, and we will ring back with a price for your Bermondsey clean.
